Mohini Jain

Supreme Court of India · 1992

In Mohini Jain v. State of Karnataka (1992), the Supreme Court held that the right to education is an integral part of the right to life with dignity under Article 21. It declared the capitation fee system unconstitutional as arbitrary and discriminatory under Article 14. It also struck down the parts of a 1989 Karnataka notification that let private medical colleges charge Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 60,000 a year. The case is the starting point of the right to education in Indian constitutional law.
